ABSTRACT

The previous chapters focused on the kinematics and kinetics of dynamical systems, and they discussed the describing equations, linearization, and qualitative analysis of the response. This chapter and the next consider the response of dynamical systems from a quantitative perspective. The interest is in

• Solving the equations of motion for the response, analyzing how the system behaves over time, and learning what the motion amplitudes are as a function of the excitation;

• Looking at the response of a system whose model is not accurately known and ascertaining the system properties from the response.
