ABSTRACT

One of the enduring critiques of P-12 education is the advantage afforded to certain groups of both students and teachers, based on their race/ethnicity, English as their primary language, gender, ability, or socioeconomic status. Further, policies designed to provide additional opportunities for marginalized groups use an “assimilation” mindset. The primary goal of this “assimilation” mindset is to create a system where minorities must become indoctrinated into the culture and values of the dominant group. In this system, the dominant group defines measures of success. There is little, if any, consideration for the merit of minority experiences.
