ABSTRACT

In this chapter we show how to put together the notions given in the rest of the book by working out in detail three case studies.

9.1 Impact of the point system on motor vehicle injuries in Italy

In July 2003, Italy introduced the point system in its traffic laws. Every Italian driver receives 20 points and every notified moving traffic violation reduces the number of points by an amount proportional to the severity of the violated rule. The number of points can also slowly increase if the driver is not notified of any violation for a sufficiently long time span. The aim of this reform was to make Italian drivers more law-abiding with the consequent reduction in the number and severity of road accidents.
