ABSTRACT

This chapter presents clinical aspects of chemically bonded bioceramics (CBBCs) and clinical testing of new biomaterials. The presentation will mainly be focused upon some Ca-aluminate-based biomaterials. 12.1 Clinical Evaluation: An IntroductionNew biomaterials have to be thoroughly tested regarding critical general properties. This is performed according to international standards (International Organisation for Standardisation [ISO]) and described in Chapter 5. Before clinical evaluation starts the new biomaterials have to be thoroughly tested related to, among others, biocompatibility and, in case when appropriate, also aspects of bioactivity. Biocompatibility, including bioactivity, is treated in some detail in Chapters 7 and 8. For most new biomaterial applications, clinical testing is required, and the evaluation differs depending on the specific application the biomaterial is intended for. Below are presented as examples of clinical evaluation results from Ca-aluminate-based biomaterials intended for dental and orthopaedic use.
