ABSTRACT

Introduction Various forms of female mutilation are practised worldwide – but mainly in Africa, where at least 28 countries are involved.1 Traditional circumcisers usually carry out these operations, which leads to individual variation; however, a broad classification has been suggested by the World Health Organization, and is shown in Table 4.1. The most common form of mutilation is FGM 2, which probably accounts for around 80% of all cases.
