ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter offers a brief review of how the problem of FGM is being dealt with in Europe. The first section gives an estimate of the magnitude of the problem of FGM in Europe, including a definition of the critical problems in assessing the prevalence of FGM in Europe. This is followed by an account of the various strategies used in Europe to handle FGM, including policy and legislative issues, education and prevention initiatives, a brief overview of the initiatives taken by the health sector and some research priorities on FGM in Europe. In conclusion, recommendations are presented for effective strategies for the prevention of FGM in Europe.
