ABSTRACT

Evidence for improved outcomes for people with dementia through provision of person-centred care had been largely observational. This one issue can make convincing pitches for wellbeing in dementia tricky. However, Chenoweth and colleagues have recently reported (Chenoweth et al., 2009) a cluster randomised controlled trial, where urban residential sites were randomly assigned to person-centred care, Dementia Care Mapping (DCM), or usual care. The authors found that person-centred care and DCM both seem to reduce agitation in people with dementia in residential care. A brief description of DCM is provided later in this chapter.
