ABSTRACT

In recent policy documents, such as the ‘Gaun Yersel!’: the self management strategy for long term conditions in Scotland (Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland, 2008), the focus is on the needs of people and not patients. Although we support this word usage throughout the CARE Approach, we use ‘person-centred’ when referring to the overall approach but the term ‘patient’ (instead of ‘person’, ‘client’ or ‘service user’) when it seems appropriate in the context of individual encounters.
