ABSTRACT

Vector-transmitted diseases are those that involve the infectious agent having another living organism (vector: for example, an insect) as part of its life cycle, and which will transmit the condition to humans. Although many of these are largely found in tropical areas, UK midwives are seeing vector-transmitted conditions more frequently with the contribution of global temperature changes, as well as travel and immigration becoming increasingly common. All the conditions have potential to aff ect both the mother and the fetus or newborn, and therefore early suspicion by the midwife may lead to rapid referral and treatment, which may restrict any possible damage. As the midwife is oft en the fi rst health professional the woman may see, it is vital she has the knowledge to be able to give advice and to assess when referral is necessary.
