ABSTRACT
OVERVIEW Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasingly common in the UK and cause a considerable burden of disease worldwide. Some can have serious consequences for mothers and babies although many are asymptomatic. Preterm birth is the most prevalent and most costly complication of genital tract infection in pregnancy both in economic and human terms (Stamm et al. 2008) (see Box 5.1).
