ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Th is chapter will touch upon a range of pedagogies, including evidence for those in the mainstream such as case-based learning (CBL), small group learning, blending learning, simulation and refl ective practice. It will then focus on alternative pedagogies such as near-peer teaching, along with emerging techniques aff orded by developing technologies such as student self-video of performance and MOOCs (massive open online courses) and small group learning via web conferences. It will conclude by discussing insights into future directions for modes of pedagogy in health professional education and trends in research methods and evaluation; particularly the use of head-to-head comparisons and economic evaluations. Th is chapter looks to raise the profi le and importance of choosing the mode of pedagogy for an activity in the consciousness of the critical and creative academic.
