ABSTRACT

This chapter includes soundings from a sample of top healthcare leaders. It explores their views on the qualities which led them to their top jobs/roles relating to healthcare, and also what they thought some of the features of top performing health organisations were in the United kingdom (UK). A number of top leaders were contacted and asked if they would be willing to contribute to the book; the majority agreed. Philip Hunt is a member of the House of Lords and Deputy Leader of the Opposition. He speaks for the Opposition on Health, Cabinet Office and Lords reform. Lord Hunt feels very strongly that organisations must have leaders who have high integrity and who are absolutely committed to safety and quality. Lord Hunt notes a particular characteristic of weak leadership is an inability to cope with strong but legitimate challenge within the organisation.
