ABSTRACT

Although a collapse from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy is not imminent here, the urgent nature of this appointment is wholly justifi ed, as malaria is a life-threatening condition that is wholly preventable. Th e risks to the mother and fetus are signifi cant. Th ere is a greater risk of maternal death, stillbirth and miscarriage in malaria. In this case, we have a pregnant patient travelling to a highly endemic area in the next 24 hours. In the fi rst instance, the mentioned risks should be relayed to any pregnant woman intending to travel to a high-risk area for malaria. Attempts should be made to dissuade her from travel due to the potential mortality and morbidity from contracting malaria. In this case, it may be diffi cult to do so, hence, an active management plan will need to be made.
