ABSTRACT

My experience in palliative care has often shown that carers have little or no idea about funding that can be accessed when a person is suffering from a lifelimiting illness. Even in a care home, some patients may be eligible to receive a benefi t or grant. When a patient is admitted to a care home, a fi nancial assessment will usually have been carried out to determine whether they are eligible for local authority funding. If they are eligible, all available benefi ts will be accessed and applied for. However, if a patient is paying for their own care, they may not realise what benefi ts they can receive, and will be reliant upon information given by their carers.
