ABSTRACT
Intensification is not always possible, and an alternative is substitution, which entails using a safer material in place of a hazardous one. Intensification and substitution decrease the need for additional protective equipment and thus decrease plant cost and complexity, but intensification, in addition, as mentioned in Chapter 2, brings about a reduction in plant size and further reduction in cost. Intensification is therefore preferred to substitution if both are possible.
