ABSTRACT

Hallucinogens, also known as psychedelic drugs, are chemicals that produce changes in perception, thought, and mood. These drugs are also referred to as psychomimetiq agents, psycholytics, or psychotogens and include lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), morning glory seeds, mescaline, psilocybin, and some of the “designer drugs” (1,2). Hallucinogens can be derived from natural products or produced synthetically. Although tetrahydro cannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, may cause hallucinations or illusions, these properties are not noted in the typical dosage that is smoked. Marijuana is discussed in Chapter 55.
