ABSTRACT

The ubiquity of plants in homes, fields, and gardens makes plant poisoning an ever-present potential health hazard. Phytotoxicology is the study of poisonings of humans and animals by plants (1). As both medicinal agents and poisons, plants have been prominent in history, in the healing arts, in religious rituals, and as homicidal and suicidal agents (2). The attractive appearance of many plants or plant parts often entices children and adults to sample them (3). With the increasing popular interest in horticulture and health foods and the recent surge in out door camping activity, the number of cases of plant intox ication is increasing and is likely to continue to rise (4).
