ABSTRACT
At the beginning of the 1990s there were two developments that provided an enormous impetus to the development of modern Bayesian methods, namely:
• the computer revolution, which made powerful computers an affordable reality;
• the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm was introduced to the statistical literature (Smith and Gelfand 1992).
