ABSTRACT

Modern technology has allowed the survival of greater and greater numbers of premature infants. Many of these infants will suffer spastic motor deficits later in life with an incidence as high as 15%1-6. Prominent intellectual deficits and develop mental disabilities can be seen in as many as half of these infants. Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) are thought to be the major neuropathologic causes of these brain injuries and their sequelae in prema ture infants.
