ABSTRACT

Any history of the Chernobyl accident and its consequences should include at least a short summary on its worldwide effect on nuclear power for electricity production. As will be seen, in spite of many anti-nuclear protests in 1986, nuclear power has not declined in terms of available electricity capacity. The major effect of the catastrophe on nuclear power policy has been more in the improvement of nuclear safety which includes not only design features of nuclear reactors but also the training and education of power plant staff. In terms of Chernobyl NPP it is a different matter and the future of the NPP for the generation of electricity is strictly limited whereas the Sarcophagus currently presents a further disaster in the making.
