ABSTRACT

Hydraulic –uid is a component of the hydraulic system. This component is used for power transmission. The most common –uids used in a hydraulic application are shown in Table 3.1.

Hydraulic system performance is affected by the physical properties of the –uid component, which include: density, viscosity, specic heat, thermal conductivity, thermal expansivity, air entrainment and air release, foaming, cavitation, and various electrical properties such as conductivity, resistivity and permittivity. In this chapter, a review of these and other important physical properties will be provided. The role of these physical properties on –uid performance in hydraulic systems will also be discussed.
