ABSTRACT

On 15 October 1954 Basil Schonland joined the payroll of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell [1]. He and Ismay moved into a house at No 2 South Drive, next door to the Cockcrofts and within the perimeter fence of the establishment. The Schonlands thus became part, physically if not yet spiritually, of one of Britain’s most illustrious research establishments.
