ABSTRACT
BCG vaccines are both the most widely used (more people alive today have received BCG than have received any other vaccine) and most controversial of today's vaccines. In order to understand this situation, we first retrace its history. Against this background, we describe the current uses of BeG, the controversies surrounding its use, and the efforts being made to develop and evaluate improved vaccines against tuberculosis.
