ABSTRACT
The ancient Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus is reputed to have discovered in around 600 b.c. that if a piece of amber is rubbed with wool or fur it becomes electrically charged. Whether this story is true or not, it is probably safe to say that Thales would not have had much inkling as to the origin of this charge or indeed that much of the world would one day rely heavily on electricity.
