Magnetism has been put to use for centuries. In fact it is possible that the ancient Chinese were making compasses from magnetite-a naturally occurring magnetic mineral which is also known as lodestone-as early as the 11th century. Whilst compasses remain important instruments to this day, there are countless other modern applications of magnetism, including medical imaging, electric motors, and audio, video, and data recording that we have become heavily reliant on. New magnetic materials are being developed all the time that could improve the performance of devices like these and may even enable others to be created.
