ABSTRACT
With the Sun heading for the horizon, John Bally bounds up a slope of volcanic cinders covered in snow, pursuing the last photons of daylight. This is no easy feat, as he is climbing in thin air. His goal? The tip of the summit cone of Mauna Kea, the high point on the Big Island of Hawaii and the tallest mountain in the Pacific basin.
