ABSTRACT
In the very early days of balloon spark chamber gamma-ray telescopes, there were a plethora of claims for the detection of unidentified discrete sources. All of these were of marginal statistical significance. Only one was subsequently confirmed in satellite experiments and this, the Crab, was clearly a known source.
