ABSTRACT
The present chapter describes the modeling concept of traffic flow at an expressway toll plaza. It is important that traffic conditions in a toll plaza be evaluated in terms of not only efficiency but also safety. As there was less knowledge of the driving behavior of Electric Toll Collection (ETC) vehicles in a toll plaza, the first step was to carry out a precise survey of vehicle trajectories in the plaza prior to the modeling. This chapter first introduces the outline of massive vehicle tracking with five cameras, after which the modeling concept of the traffic simulation for a toll plaza is explained based on the tracking data. The model was implemented as an extension module of AVENUE, a microscopic traffic simulation model, and was validated. The final section describes the case studies through this simulation model as well as the implications of the study.
