ABSTRACT

Imagine that you are a security guard of a nuclear facility. One of your duties is to detect suspect intruders and activities, by viewing live video streams captured by surveillance cameras installed inside and around the facility, and to take immediate actions in response to potential threats. Assume that you suddenly notice a suspect man who wears a white T-shirt and sunglasses in a restricted area of the facility. You want to quickly browse through the recorded videos by the surveillance cameras to see where this person has been and what he has done in the facility, and when, where, and how he entered

the building. Manually examining hour-long surveillance videos from a large number of cameras is tedious, time consuming, and error prone. An intelligent video surveillance system capable of people search (Chapter 14) can help you to fi nd the person from these videos in just a few minutes. In addition, automated multi-camera tracking systems (Chapters 11 through 13) can continually track this person and return his 3D coordinates in the building.
