ABSTRACT

Various models of damping are brie£y introduced, followed by a description of three basic models: linear viscous damping, bilinear damping, and sublinear damping.

The key damping design principles emphasized in this book are established by (1) interpreting the Lazan (1968) formulation of damping mechanisms within the context of structural engineering; (2) advanced structural dynamics, particularly with high damping; (3) observation from various experimental studies; and (4) interactions with the damper design industry. Although these principles are fundamentally rather theoretical, they are readily applicable to engineering practice.
