ABSTRACT

Ukraine, the largest European country by territory (Figure 19.1), has a population of almost 47 million people. e country is bisected in the north-south direction by the Dnipro River. Along its length of about 1000 km many hydroelectric power stations have been constructed, with dams creating arti‚cial lakes several kilometers wide. Large cities and industrial centers such as Kyiv, Cherkasy, Kremenchuk, Dniprodzerzhynsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson are located along the Dnipro River. Bridges crossing the Dnipro play a vital role in the Ukraine transportation system. e Ukrainian bridge construction industry, much a‰ected by economic crisis in the early 1990s, is currently in the process of revival. At the present, three major bridges over the Dnipro River are being constructed, two in the city of Kyiv and one in Zaporizhia City.
