Introduction For every 10 000 live births, 23 children have congenital heart disease which requires surgery before the age of 1 year. These children fall into two categories: those who require surgery within the first year of life, and those who, philosophically, we consider would do better if complete correction were performed during this time ( Table 45.1 ).
