Since the emergence of life on Earth, the food chains depend on the use of solar energy by photosyntheticorganisms.Onecharacteristicfeatureoftheseorganismsresidesintheirgloballackofmobility,eventhoughtmicroalgaecanmoveinthewatercolumn.Consequently,thistypeoforganisms cannotrunawayfromthealterationsintheirbioticand/orabioticenvironments,includingdecienciesorexcessesoflightornutrients.Tocopewiththesealterations,photosyntheticcellsactivatedifferent types of defense mechanisms, including reorientations of the plastid metabolism.
