Most crops cultivated for human or animal consumption suffer severely under saline soil conditions.Leavesmaychangetheircolor.Theyoungestonemaylooknormalgreen,olderonesdarker green,buttheoldestlooksilveryandedgesbecomeprogressivelynecrotic.However,itisnotonly theshootthatre…ectssalinegrowthconditions,itisalsotheroot.Fromeldobservationsitiswell knownthat,forexample,rootsofsweetpotatoesgrowingundersalinesoilsconditionsdevelopa much ner root system than under nonsaline conditions. So, we conclude that modications at root levelarealsoastrategyofplantstoadapttosalinesoilconditionsandtoimprovetheirsalttolerance (Schleiff, 2005).
