4G will introduce a user-centric system, which will personalize not only services but also terminal characteristics. Complex terminals should be able to function in multiple modes and access several radio technologies, so that the user receives a personally tailored service. Cooperation among users is of high importance, since resources may be “borrowed” from other users in exchange for certain “rewards”; however, powerful incentives need to be placed before full cooperation can be guaranteed and actually established. In this chapter, the state of the art in cooperation incentives is examined. The problem is motivated by considering cooperative schemes, through the creation of coalitions between players. More specifically, current approaches of both credit-based and reputation-based systems, followed by their strengths and weaknesses, are presented. This chapter is concluded by identifying some open research issues.
