ABSTRACT

This chapter teaches methods for using VoiceXML 2.0 to create prototypes of speech user interfaces (SUIs), touching on many, but not all, of the design points discussed in Chapters 7 and 8. It does not teach professional VoiceXML coding practices, is for reference purposes only, and carries no warranty whatsoever. It does, however, teach in a step-by-step fashion critical prototyping skills that are useful for evaluating SUI concepts and in conducting early usability studies. If you’re interested in trying out the code or writing your own prototypes, at the time of writing this chapter, there are some free Web-based VoiceXML development services (for example, cafe.bevocal.com or studio.tellme.com) that may be worth exploring.
