ABSTRACT

Almost every aspect of modern society is controlled by software. One need look no further than the defense industry to see how dramatic and pervasive software has become. Consider the following military examples:

• In the early 1970s, the F4 fighter had no digital computer or software. • In the late 1970s, the F16A fighter had 50 digital processors and 135,000

lines of code (135 KLOC). • In the late 1980s, the F16D fighter had 300 digital processors and 236 KLOC. • In the late 1990s, the B-2 bomber had more than 200 digital processors and

5000 KLOC. • The Future Combat Systems (FCS) have between 16,000 and 50,000 KLOC.
