ABSTRACT

The cost–benefit analysis is a prominent analysis found in many business cases. The cost–benefit analysis is a systematic tool that is used to study, analyze, evaluate, and compare projects, and it provides no value to investment cases in respect of technical analyses. The business case provides a comprehensive view of the different components and perspectives that play a role in the project. Among the tools and approaches that have been designed to overcome the limitations of technical analysis, which was useful and necessary but insufficient to capture the complexity of the business environment, is the cost–benefit analysis for investment projects. The business case should provide reliable information to evaluate the expected investment and profitability for the project under consideration. Any interruption or early termination of the project necessarily represents the sacrifice of certain benefits and financial returns that were expected outcomes from project performance, as presented in the business case.
