ABSTRACT

Local scour at bridge structures has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically over the past fifty years, due to its economical and strategic fallouts.

A typical experimental approach to the phenomenon is the ‘black box’ analysis, where the dependence of a state variable (typically the maximum scour depth) on a set of bulk control parameters is investigated to tune prediction equations (see for example Coleman et al. 2003).
