ABSTRACT

Saint Venant (SV) equations (or shallow water equations) are usually applied and numerically solved for the simulation of unsteady shallow water flows (Saint Venant, 1871). Both explicit and implicit numerical methods can be used for the solution. Even though implicit schemes are stable for CFL numbers greater than 1, they lead to the solution of large non linear algebraic systems, and the computational effort grows very quickly along with the number of elements. Implicit Preissman schemes show also other limitations, especially for simulations of transcritical flows (Meselhe et al., 1997).
