ABSTRACT

In many delta areas clay is the raw material available in large quantities, either directly from the subsoil or from excavation at construction sites. In some areas such as the western part of the Netherlands and the central plain of Thailand this clay contains much organic matter. This organic clay is characterised by a very high water content, very low strength and very high compressibility. Normally, this clay is not used in engineering work. It has been regarded as useless or waste material and has always been eliminated by dumping in disposal areas or in the sea. At present, the amount of this material, as spoil from construction sites, is increasing due to development projects. Due to environmental concern and limited disposal area, handling the clay becomes a problem. Solving this problem efficiently is relevant. Re-use of very soft organic clay may be a way to solve at least part of the problem.
