ABSTRACT

Comprising around 30,000 species, fish have developed a large variety not only of morphology and mode of life but also of reproductive strategies. Many different reproductive styles have been created in the course of evolution. Reviews on modes of reproduction in fish are given, e.g., by Breder and Rosen (1966), Balon (1975, 1981) and Thresher (1984). This chapter provides an overview over the variety of life history phenomena associated with different reproductive styles. The different reproductive strategies present in fish are summarized in a table.
