ABSTRACT

Research into fish mating systems has lagged behind those of birds and insects, principally due to the inherent difficulties in studying subjects which live both underwater and frequently at depths or in environments that are difficult to access. Despite the physical challenges, there have been regular and significant advances in our understanding of fish mating systems over the last 40 years. Breder and Rosen's (1966) Modes of Reproduction in Fishes and Thresher's (1984) Reproduction in Coral Reef Fishes have proved to be invaluable resources. Since then, there have been several key reviews summarizing recent advances, notably by Barlow (1984, 1986), Berglund (1997), Avise et al. (2002) and Whiteman and Cote (2004)- We direct interested readers to these publications.
