ABSTRACT

The central limit theorem says nothing about ranges and standard deviations from nonnormal distributions, and even the distribution of ranges from a normal distribution is nonnormal. The long upper tail of the gamma distribution suggests that its sample ranges and standard deviations will be higher than those from a normal distribution with the same variance.
