ABSTRACT

Protons bind with an ordinary chemical bond particularly to the atoms N, O, and F and form molecules such as NH3, H2O, and HF. The bound protons may additionally bind to N, O, and F in neighboring molecules, but with a weaker bond, called a hydrogen bond (Figure 9.1). Hydrogen bonds are responsible for the remarkable molecular ordering in water and the structure of several polymers and are the driving force for the base pairing in DNA.
