ABSTRACT
In steep headwater catchments in the Alps debris flows occur every year, and frequently such events cause considerable damage. A debris flow is a rapidly flowing mixture of soil with different amounts of water. At the front of a debris flow there is a high concentration of solids, and these flows are characterized by an unsteady and surging flow behavior, clearly distinguishable from a typically more steady water discharge in a stream channel.
