ABSTRACT
The Brazilian pulp and paper industry comprises 220 companies that operate 255 industrial units, located in sixteen Brazilian States. The wood utilised by the industry is harvested exclusively from planted forests, which currently cover 1.4 million ha, mainly eucalyptus (62 per cent) and pine (36 per cent). Brazil is the world’s seventh largest pulp producer and ranks twelfth in paper production. In 1997 the sector employed 67,000 people in industrial activities and 35,000 in forestry work, totalling 102,000 direct jobs (BRACELPA 1997a).
