ABSTRACT

It is important to note the misconception that d iabetes is a resu lt o f con sum in g too m uch sugar. It is not yet proven to be correct. However, eating too much sugar or sweets may cause obesity, an important risk factor for diabetes. There are two basic reasons of diabetes (i) Pancreatic Beta (@) cell dysfunction causing impairment in the production and/or function of insulin which plays key roles in controlling the level of glucose in blood and (ii) Insulin Resistance or development of resistance by the cells to take up insulin. Glucose plays a number of roles in our body and the most important role is to provide energy to our systems. Another factor contributing to diabetes development is the defect in incretins hormonal system. This hormonal system releases Glucagon-like peptides in response to oral glucose load and helps in regulating glucose levels in the blood.
