ABSTRACT

Decision making in staff scheduling in healthcare organizations is influenced by imprecise goals, preferences, and expectations of (1) patients, (2) management, and (3) workers. As such, the decision-making process often takes place under fuzzy goals and constraints. Where management goals, staff preferences, patients’ preferences, and the consequences of the decisions taken are not precisely known at the planning stage, staff scheduling is complex. Motivated by the presence of imprecise, conflicting goals and preferences in healthcare service operations, the theme of this book was about developing fuzzy approaches to staff scheduling problems.
