ABSTRACT

The US Government’s first terrestrial-oriented solar activity was initiated under the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Research Applied to National Needs (RANN) program in 1971.72 As described in Chapter 3, the NSF/NASA panel’s conclusion was reported in December 1972. This was followed by the Cherry Hill meeting in 1973. The result was to conduct research to reduce the manufacturing cost of photovoltaic (PV) to be able to be used for either ground or space electric powergenerating stations.
